Policies and Expectations

Abiding by the rules, policies and expectations of a classroom creates a positive work environment for everyone...please keep that in mind throughout this year!

Policies-

1. Absences:  3 absences (not including excused ones) will result in after school detention. When students are absent, the student remains responsible for all work done in class and homework due for the next day (i.e. reading assignments, reading quizzes, short writing assignments, etc.).  You will be able to find what the general overview of that class was about by checking the day-to-day outline in the syllabus, calling a friend, or sending me an email at cn46629p@pace.edu. If a test/quiz is missed, students will have 3 days to make it up once they return to school (unless otherwise told). These exams will be placed in the Testing Center for students. Once the test is complete, please let me know so I can retrieve it and give you a proper grade. Until a student has made up a test and advised me they have done so, thee grade will remain a 0.

2. Lateness: Students should be in their seats, will materials (i.e. journal notebooks, pen, book, etc.) ready to work when the bell sounds. If you have a late pass, please quietly come in, put it on my desk and take your seat. If you are late 3 times, that will count as 1 absence. The policy for 3 absences applies to late absences, as well. (If students are late 9 times, that student will receive after school detention).

3. Re-test: Studnets will have the ability to retake ONE exam throughout the year. Students must take this re-test no more then three days after receiving their test grade. In addition to this, they must ask and receive permission before taking the new, revised examination.

4. Extra Help: Please see the section titles ‘Contact Me’ for Office Hours pertaining to afterschool times. If you would like to meet during or before school, please come a schedule a time that will work best for you. My job is to help you succeed.

5. Cell Phone/iPad/Tablet Device: Although I encourage and will incorporate technology into our lessons, projects and homework, I understand that these devices can be distracting for students using and around them. Devices can only be used and out on the student's desk when the teacher has explicitly announced their allowable use. If the device is seen out otherwise, there will be 2 warnings- the first will be verbal, the second, the device will be confiscated. (If this is the first offence, only for the class period. If this is the second, or more, you will have to retrieve it from the Main Office at the end of the day.)

6. Plagiarism: Academic honesty demands that all students avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism is defined by The
Little Brown Compact Handbook as “the presentation of someone else’s ideas or words as your own. Whether deliberate or accidental, plagiarism is a serious…offense” (Aaron 334). Plagiarism will result in failing the assignment and possibly the course. The first time a student plagiarizes, he/she will receive an F for the assignment. If there is a second instance of plagiarism, he/she will fail the course.

HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM
-Use quotation marks when quoting an author’s words exactly as they appear in the source. Also cite in the text or indicate in parentheses the author’s name and the page number at the end of each paraphrase or summary.
-Use Modern Language Association (MLA) style documentation for all essays.
-Include a Works Cited list at the end of your essay, which includes all the sources you quoted, paraphrased, or summarized in your paper.
-Do not borrow, buy, or copy all or part of another’s work—published or not—and submit it as your own.

Expectations-

1. Good Attendance: Students should be attending every class on time. Unless a student has an illness making class attendance problematic or an approved excused absence, he or she should be in class. Poor attendance will be reflected in your grades! Students wishing to opt out of class for instrumental lessons or for other school-sponsored activities must have a note signed by their parents and teacher authorizing such. When a student misses class, he/she is responsible for all work covered during that class and for any assigned homework.

2. Class Preparation: Students are expected to show up to class on time with all necessary materials. Paying attention, taking notes, organizing material, participating in activities and being mentally engaged count as 5% of your overall grade.

3. Good Behavior: Students should conduct themselves appropriately, being respectful of the rights of others to learn in an orderly environment.

4.Integrity: Students should do their own work. They should not copy homework, cheat on tests, hand in the same paper or have someone else do their work for them. These are all examples of plagiarism and there will be penalizations for doing such.

5.Make-up Work: When a student misses class, they are still responsible for the material covered in class, all worksheets done in class, in addition to homework for that night. Students will make up this work in a timely fashion. If an extension is needed, they will be at my discretion.

6. Homework: All homework is due on the assigned date. No late homework will be accepted. Students returning after an absence may hand in homework in accordance with the make-up work policy.
